Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday made a phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to share his assessment of his meeting with President Trump in Alaska on the Ukraine war.

While thanking President Putin, the Prime Minister underlined India’s consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue. He reiterated that India supports all efforts in this regard.

The two leaders also touched upon a number of issues of bilateral cooperation with a view to further strengthening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.

This is the second telephonic conversation between the two leaders in past two weeks. In the previous phone call on August 8, President Putin briefed PM Modi on the developments concerning Ukraine.

Before Putin’s call with PM Modi, the Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement, said India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. “Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable. India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

Putin-Trump Talk

Putin met Trump for a three-hour talk in Alaska on Friday. However, the summit offered no breakthrough on a ceasefire in the conflict that has left tens of thousands dead and caused widespread destruction in Ukraine.

Trump is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington along with several European leaders on Monday. Trump has asked Zelenskyy to accept a peace deal in the ongoing war against Russia, saying he has the power to end the war almost immediately, or he can continue to fight on. The US President also ruled out reclaiming Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, and Ukraine’s inclusion in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), something that Russia has opposed for a long.
