Afghanistan Follows India’s Path
Will Block Pakistan’s Water
The Sunday Mail
New Delhi. After India, Afghanistan may also block Pakistan’s water supply. Taliban Deputy Information Minister Mujahid Farahi announced that the Ministry of Water and Energy has received instructions from Taliban Supreme Leader Sheikh Hibatullah Akhundzada to construct a dam on the Kunar River without delay. This river flows into Pakistan and is a major source of water for Pakistan.
According to the Afghan Information Ministry, Taliban-ruled Afghanistan is planning to build dams and restrict water from Pakistani rivers. The order to construct a dam on the Kunar River as soon as possible was given by Taliban Supreme Leader Maulvi Hibatullah Akhundzada. This public statement regarding water rights comes just weeks after the war between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which left hundreds dead.
Afghanistan’s decision comes after India decided to share water with Pakistan. India suspended the Indus Water Treaty, under which it shares water from three western rivers, after the killing of 26 civilians by Pakistani and Pakistan-backed militants in Pahalgam on April 22.
