Trump announces another 100% tariff

The Sunday mail

New Delhi. US President Donald Trump announced today on his social media platform, Truth Social, that the US will impose heavy tariffs on several imported goods starting October 1, 2025. The most significant move is a 100% tariff on pharmaceutical products. Trump stated that this rule will not apply to companies that have begun construction of production plants in the US. If production is not taking place within the US, they will be subject to a 100% tariff.

In addition, a 50% tariff will be imposed on kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, a 30% tariff on upholstered furniture, and a 25% tariff on heavy trucks. Trump argued that this measure was being taken to protect American industries from foreign competition and strengthen national security. He also claimed that the tariffs would increase investment in the US and boost domestic manufacturing. However, recent data shows that employment in US industries has declined. Since April, 42,000 jobs in the manufacturing sector and 8,000 jobs in the construction sector have been lost.

This announcement will not be limited to the US, but will also impact countries that export their products there. India, one of the largest producers and exporters of pharmaceuticals globally, could be deeply affected by this policy. The US is the largest market for Indian pharmaceutical companies. India’s exports of generic medicines to the US have steadily increased, but some companies also trade in branded and patented medicines. Following the 100% tariff, Indian medicines will reach the US market at twice the price. This will directly impact demand and reduce the competitiveness of Indian companies. If this situation persists, Indian pharmaceutical companies could suffer significant revenue losses.

India also exports furniture and cabinetry to the US. Although this is less than that of China and Vietnam, this new tariff will dent India’s growing share. The increased prices of furniture and cabinetry will reduce demand from US consumers, leading to losses for Indian exporters.
