New Delhi: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Dhami’s troubles show no sign of abating. In an election year, the Congress party is getting issues handed to them on a silver platter. Dhami is not only under attack from the Congress but also facing anger from within his own party. Uttarakhand politics was already heated after Urmila Sanawar, who claims to be the wife of former BJP MLA Suresh Rathore, directly accused senior BJP leaders in the Ankita Bhandari murder case. Now, the murder of a student from Tripura has exposed the shortcomings of law and order. The Uttarakhand state unit was already running a statewide agitation demanding a CBI inquiry into the Ankita Bhandari murder case, targeting CM Dhami. Now, Dhami is under fire at the national level. Several leaders within the state BJP were also angry with CM Dhami’s working style. Now they are raising even more questions. The pressure on the BJP high command to replace Dhami is constantly increasing.
Following Urmila Sanawar’s allegations, senior BJP leader and National General Secretary Dushyant Gautam has complained to the Home Secretary and demanded action against those making the allegations. The police have not yet taken any action. But the difficulties for the BJP have increased. No BJP leader from Uttarakhand to Delhi is ready to speak on the matter. This means that no leader has come forward to defend National General Secretary Dushyant Gautam, State President Mahendra Bhatt, Ajay Kumar, and CM Dhami. On the contrary, MP Trivendra Rawat, former MLA Vijaya Barthwal, and former chairman of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Committee, Ajendra Ajay, have raised tough questions. BJP leader Vijay Barthwal supported the demand for a CBI inquiry, while Ajendra Ajay demanded the resignation of the accused leaders on moral grounds. All is not well within the BJP. Meanwhile, the Congress has expressed deep sorrow over the murder of 24-year-old Angel Chakma, a student from Tripura, in a racial attack in Dehradun, and demanded strict punishment for the culprits. The party demanded swift legal action in the case, the immediate arrest of the absconding main accused, and an inquiry into the reasons for the delay in filing the FIR. Gaurav Gogoi, the party’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha and president of the Assam Congress, reiterated Angel Chakma’s last words, saying, “I am an Indian, I am not from China.” He emphasized that people from the Northeast are Indians, not Chinese. The Congress leader expressed serious concern over the role of the local police. Citing statements from Angel Chakma’s family members, he said that the FIR was registered almost 12 days after the incident and that action was initiated only after student protests. The main accused is still at large, while four others have been arrested. The Congress criticized the Modi government, saying that the current administration talks about “One India” but ignores the diversity within it. He cited the example of Karbi Anglong in Assam, where even the indigenous people are being labeled as outsiders.
